This was it – The big trip. I feel like I’ve been teasing everyone, including myself, with this vacation forever. It started when Chris and I decided to finally cross the pond and visit France in 2018. 2018 turned into 2019. We turned into parents. France turned into Italy in 2021 for our fifth anniversary. Then COVID became a thing. The more I thought about it, the more out of reach Europe felt.
I remember sitting in the grocery store parking lot, praying about our vacation for this year. I unashamedly asked the Lord to bless us with a vacation – Preferably Italy, but He knows what’s best so I would be open minded. I wanted Chris and I to get out of town and spend some time together.
Vermont seemed to have come out of nowhere, but the more we tossed around the idea, the more serious we began to discuss it. It wasn’t long until we planned a whole road trip up the East. Our route took us from Columbia to Florence, then through North Carolina and Virginia all the way up to Pennsylvania where we stayed the night in – drum roll, please – Scranton. Office fans, where ya at?!
From PA we journeyed through a piece of upstate New York until we made it to our temporary home in Sutton, Vermont; a small town half an hour from Montreal and a population of just over 1,000. The fall foliage was more beautiful than any photo I had seen. The air was refreshing and crisp, a welcome change from the summer humidity of South Carolina. It was exactly what we were looking for.
We hiked up beautiful mountain trials and tried lots of local food. Side note, the AirBnb we stayed in was stocked with fresh eggs from the farm and it was just the icing on the cake of our stay. I, personally, was very excited to get my hands on some authentic maple syrup. Chris was looking forward to visiting local farmer’s markets, which we did; along with a few mom and pop shops. Our trip was the postcard version of autumn!
The many hours spent in the car, passing through states we had never been to, and seeing a version of autumn that we don’t see in the south was so much fun. Above all, the alone time with Chris was the best part of it all. I can’t wait for our next adventure.
P.S. I’ve included links to where we stayed and to some of the places we visited during our getaway. If you’re a fan of the fall time like us, I encourage you to check them out when planning your next vacay!
