Connecting with the right photographer to document your memories is super important. Be it your little one’s first birthday (cake smash, anyone?) or your dream wedding, you want to make sure you do more than just Google a list of “photographers near me” and pick the one that appears to be most convenient.
Here’s the truth, people who aren’t experienced with hiring a photographer tend to cast out a net, find some folks who are talented and within their price range, then jump straight into the booking process. While this isn’t detrimental by any means, doing just a smidge of research in the beginning will benefit you a ton in the long run!
This is absolutely one of those instances where a little goes a long way. There are thousands upon thousands of talented photographers out there, but believe it or not, talent isn’t the only aspect you should be paying attention to. Personality, subject interest, and editing styles are all important details that make each photographer unique and should be taken into account before you sign an agreement. When you find someone that lines up with your vision for your shoot, the end result will knock your socks off!
The answer to this will be relative to the reader since everyone’s vision and needs are a little different. Though I do recommend the same general guidelines you should use whenever you hire someone for professional services, such as someone who communicates with you well, who listens to your needs (and is honest if they are unable to meet them), and is professional!*
When you envision your shoot, or event you’re planning, there’s likely some key elements that come to mind. Maybe you want a lot of attention on the little details or you want candid moments to be captured. Put some time into thinking about what you want your shoot to look like and then search for photographers whose style correlates with your vision. The majority of pros have found a certain style that they use consistently because it’s one that defines their brand. That means that the dark and moody photographer that you’re looking at probably won’t make any bright and airy edits. If we all did the same thing or a little bit of everything, none of us would be the experts we are. Every photographer has an expertise in at least one area, so you want to find someone who focuses on the type of shoot you’re planning!
*Notice that I didn’t add experience in there! Now, I won’t totally negate experience because it is important, but we, as photographers, all start somewhere. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the lovely folks who trusted in my abilities despite my lack of experience! Being granted opportunities like this is how we develop (pun intended) our talents so that we can continue to serve you even better in the future. When you hire a photographer who doesn’t have a ton of experience under their belt, consider yourself an investor into their future!
If this has sounded at all daunting, I promise it’s not as difficult as it sounds! Whatever platform you use to do your initial search, simply reach out to the togs you are interested in. This may look like a DM on social media or an email directly from their website. We love hearing from people, even if it doesn’t always end in a booking! Say hello, tell us what you’re planning and share your vision with us. If we see ourselves being a good fit, we’ll be happy to work with you, but if your needs are outside of our wheelhouse, we will politely let you know and possibly even give you recommendations to someone who we believe will serve you best!
The big take away here is to be intentional and not rush into anything. Trust me, I get it – Even before I was a photographer, I always appreciated the art and when it came time for me to book an engagement photographer (a.k.a. my first ever pro photographer experience), I was eager to find someone and get to posing! Channel that excitement into finding Mr. or Ms. Right! Do an initial search, find a few togs that catch your eye, and then simply communicate with them. I guarantee that the results will be so worth that little bit of extra effort you put in.
Speaking of finding the right photographer – If you’re looking for a gal who will help take your personal brand to the next level, climb a mountain with you to capture your vows, or come to your home to document the beauty of your every day, I’m here for it! Shoot me an email today sharing your vision with me and let’s make it happen!
