It seems like it was only yesterday I was typing a post announcing that we were expecting and now we’re getting ready to celebrate our first Christmas as a family of three! The time, you guys.
Part of this “getting ready” is figuring out what the heck to get our Layla bug for her first Christmas. A quick Google search showed me that I wasn’t alone in figuring this out. What to get for your baby’s first Christmas is puzzling to all new parents, whether your babe is rounding the corner to their first year or you’re bringing them home just in time for the holidays. What do you get them? Should you get them anything?
First we’ll address the latter – Every family is different, but I vote YES! Absolutely get your little one something, even if it’s a tiny keepsake to document your first Christmas together.
As for what to get them, well, that can be a little more tricky. I think most of us can agree that the easiest go-to gift is a cute outfit, but I’ve heard so many moms mention how they have so many clothes, their little one can’t even wear them all! Baby clothes are the cutest and most fun to shop for, thus the easiest and most tempting to buy. Do not let this post talk you out of picking out a cute outfit as gift, but do let it inspire you to think beyond the onesies and tutus.
If you haven’t heard of this mom-found brand, I encourage you go check them out as soon as you finish this post! You can pick from a variety of animals and their corresponding story books that are meant to teach children positive social-emotional skills. This is what Layla will be unwrapping for her first Christmas – We picked out the Honey Bear bundle which is all about gratitude and I am so excited for her to finally have her Slumberkin!
This is a gift that is both useful and can be turned into a keepsake. These engraved wooden rattles from Etsy (the online store of my people) are safe for babies to gnaw on and play with. When rattles are no longer their toy of choice, you can store it in something like a hope chest for when your little one isn’t so little anymore as a sweet memento.
I’m a believer that one can never have too many books – no matter how old you are! There are many benefits of reading to your baby (other than just having fun!) like bonding and promoting early learning. A good book is a gift both baby and parents can enjoy. A few of our favorites are Goodnight Moon, If You Give a Mouse A Cookie, and Milo and The Magical Stones.
Okay, let me explain before you keep scrolling – Just like books, playing music for your little one has some great benefits and is another gift to be enjoyed by both baby and parents! Instead of investing in a CD player (So last decade), find a quality bluetooth speaker, like this one we got for Layla, and choose what to play straight from your phone. Find a playlist with soothing rain sounds, white noise, or Mozart – The options are endless!
Pro Tip: After you put your little one to bed, keep the tunes going, pour yourself a glass of wine, and treat yourself to an at home mani.. Or give your hubby some love. *wink*
This one is for gift givers aside from the parents. Grandmas, aunts, besties – I’m talking to you! A diaper subscription from IncrediBundles is truly the gift that keeps on giving. The gift of a clean and comfy bottom is also a gift of happy baby, which leads to happy parents! We were the recipient of this awesome gift (Thank you, Grandad!) and we have loved it so much I just have to tell people about it! Six months of free diapers and wipes, delivered to your door? Yes, please!
These gift ideas are ones that are sure to please, but don’t be afraid to get creative! The key to successful gift giving, no matter who you’re buying for, is not to overthink it and just have fun. Besides, if we’re honest, our tots aren’t going to remember what they got on their first Christmas so HAVE FUN picking out a little gift for you to help them unwrap on Christmas morning. As I was just reminded, the first Christmas was pretty simple so it’s okay if yours is too.
Let me know which gift you chose, or if you got something completely different, for your little ones first Christmas in the comments below!
