Last week on the blog, I shared with you guys a few practical things to do when you’re in need of a creativity refresh. Creator’s block – basically writer’s block expanded to include all creative minds because it is, unfortunately, a wall we all hit in our creative lives. Your creativity is truly like any other muscle in your body – you have to use it to build it.
And what can we do to help build muscles? Yes, exercise! Who’s ready to get swole?
I’m assuming you clicked on this post because you’re in need of some writing inspiration for your blog. First of all, let me assure you that you’re not as stuck as you think you are and I have a super fun, super simple writing exercise that will give your creative muscles a boost.
Before you panic and think, A writing exercise sounds great and all, Dev, but it’s writing that I’m having trouble with in the first place! bear with me! Super fun and super simple – I promise!
Do you remember the brain dump exercise you probably learned in high school English? That’s what we’re doing here.
If I’ve lost you, let me explain –
It’s simply an exercise where you set a timer for say, three minutes, and write down anything and everything that pops into that amazing noggin of yours. When I say anything, I mean anything and bonus – Spelling, punctuation, and grammar are not important. We’re breaking all the English rules to get those creative juices flowing!
Once time is up, go back to re-read what you’ve written highlighting key words, sentences, etc. as you go. Below your writing, bullet point the blog topics that come to mind based on your highlights. Trust me, you are guaranteed to get at least two good topics from this and if you’re posting two blogs a week (like yours truly!), that is a whole week’s worth of posts! #winning
Aside from being an easy way to help grow your blog, I also find this exercise to be great for freeing up mental space. When you’re writing, really dump the contents of your brain onto the paper and allow your thoughts to slow. If that means you need to set your timer for five minutes instead of three – Go for it! There’s no rules here! To truly get the most out of this exercise, find a quiet space where you can clearly hear your own thoughts and focus on your writing.
Ready to give it a go? I’ve included a real example of my most recent brain dump entry to help you get started because who doesn’t love a good template, amiright?
P.S., Share your blog post in your Insta stories and tag me in it so I can swing by and check it out! I love discovering new blogs!
